No quote to open this week's column, because I cannot find anything that truly represents the revulsion I feel. This week's column was supposed to be about the great time I had last week at the Millarworld opening party down in London, but I feel compelled to write about something much more important. In the mid 1980's the British government suggested moving everyone with AIDS into concentration camps. This would have been a total violation of human rights, for obvious reasons. The party in power at the time were the Conservatives - whose policies are simply "Keep the rich rich, who cares about the poor?" A few years ago there was a changearound and the Conservatives were replaced by the Labour party. Labour always had an almost socialist view - Minimum wage, Unions etc. etc. At first, it looked as if things would be great. Slowly, but surely, however, the Labour party became the Conservative party. Nothing has changed from the bad old days of Thatcherite Britain. And something I read about in the last few days has convinced me that nothing will change either. David Blunkett. Who is this man? He is the United Kingdom's Home Secretary. He has revealed that he plans to reintroduce a law that was first enforced thirty years ago in Northern Ireland. Internment Without Trial. Claiming to be an effective "anti-terrorist" measure, it has proved in the past to be anything but. Basically, if somebody is suspected of conspiring, or planning terrorist actions, or ANY FORM OF CRIME, they can be arrested and imprisoned WITHOUT TRIAL. They have the right to appeal, but neither they nor their lawyers would be allowed access to any evidence if it was classed as "sensitive". Thirty years ago this law was used to get rid of potential IRA supporters in Northern Ireland (and yet many people wrongly imprisoned then joined the IRA to avenge themselves), and now it is painfully obvious what is going to happen. Are you Muslim? Get ready to be thrown into jail. In the government's eyes, Muslims are seen as a "terrorist threat". You can bet your sweet fucking arses that they will be ferreted out and locked up in no time flat. The government will say that they only use british intelligence reports to arrest suspected criminals. And yet we have seen recently just how inaccurate those intelligence reports can be. All this law will serve to accomplish is the further distancing of the government, the populace and ethnic minorities. Christ, why don't we just replace the government with the BN fucking P and then we can kick all non-whites out the fucking country? What makes me so fucking angry about this whole thing is the fact that there is nothing I can do. I cannot leave the country, because there are few places to go. America? Ha! Who gives the British their crazy fucking ideas in the first place? Besides, if the government discover I'm trying to leave the country they'll probably lock me up without even hearing my story. Welcome to Police State 2002 - The Un-United Kingdom. [Chad - sorry about the shortness of the column and the change of subject. But I am so fucking angry at the moment, it had to be done. ]
