"Science has failed our world. Science has failed our Mother, Earth." - System of a Down Picture the scene: You need to explain why something happened. You have no Idea why it happened, of course, but the people asking why need to know. There isn't much time. What do you do? You make something up, of course. What have I just described? Is it lying? Fabrication of the truth? Yes, of course it is. But we have a special name for this kind of falsehood. We call it science. Science is essentially a collection of rules written by mankind to explain the world we find ourselves thrust into. The human race has been cursed with an insatiable thirst for knowledge, for explanation. We feel the need to explain the reasoning for every event. There's only one problem with this: It simply is not possible. I'm sure you've all heard people say that something is "not scientifically possible", or that something "defies the laws of science". And yet, these things happen. So how do we explain something that doesn't fit into our mould? Well, there are essentially three ways of dealing with these events. The first option is to completely rewrite the rules and start again from scratch, taking into account what we know about these new events. Needless to say, this happens almost never, because people don't want to admit that their life's work is meaningless. The second option is to make up a whole new rule, which only applies in this case (An example of this is the definition of the 'small atomic force' which holds atoms together). This is a cop-out, it's true, but it happens surprisingly frequently. The third, and most frequent option, is to simply deny that the events occur at all. Of course, the counter to my argument would be to say "But look at all the technological advancements made in recent years. If science is bollocks, then how do you explain that?" Simple. The rules that we have invented for many of our finest scientific technology (Computers, for example) run parallel to the basic rules of the universe: Mathematics. Mathematics are not the same as science. Whereas science consists of rules invented by man to explain the world he inhabits, mathematics form a universal presence. There is maths in everything around, although sometimes it's not entirely visible. Take a look around - symmetry in nature, salt crystals forming perfect cubes, snowflakes. All these things show signs of mathematics, but that's only scraping the surface. There is (or was) a tribal race existing in South America who spoke using a unique language. What was so interesting about this language is that it was perfectly structured; similar to modern computer programming languages. It would be possible, in fact, to use this language as a programming method without any form of modification. But these people had no computers of any kind. A freak coincidence? we'll never know. For now, think on this: If we are ever visited by an alien race (and many people believe we already have been), will they have their own science? Undoubtedly. Will it be similar to ours? Almost certainly not. But I'm willing to bet that they will have an understanding of Mathematics which, in its purest form, will be identical to our own. I'll leave you to do your own research into science. In particular, keep an eye out for things that seem to have been invented specifically to explain a single event. Why not research the differences between Einsteinian Physics and Newtonian Physics? As you read into the subjects, you should come to the same conclusion: The only constant within science is a basis in Mathematics. Science cannot prove the existance of a God. But science also cannot disprove the existance of a God. If God exists in all things, perhaps our creator is Mathematics itself. This coloumn certainly is not the correct forum to get into a lengthy discussion on creation theory, and I certainly do not have the answers everyone seeks. I hope I've given you the impetus to question the science we take for granted. Maybe you'll look at the world differently now.
